SOME MEN MIGHT BE put off by a little competition, but Nate Cafferty wasnât one of them. Prowling the Elvis suite that night, he was ready to convince Carleen that she didnât want Ian Brock or Tobias Hamilton.
That the only man she wanted was him.
Because he sure as hell wanted her. That fact had hit him like a brick the moment heâd seen Ian Brock with her tonight. Jealousy had risen up inside of him, threatening to boil over. His first instinct had been to put his fist through the guyâs smart mouth.
Instead, he reined in those emotions, using them to focus on the prize, just like heâd been taught by his old boxing coach. As a teenager, the prize had been a championship belt or cold, hard cash.
Now the prize was Carleen.
He knew going into this assignment that she was no ordinary woman. Itâs true that his pride had taken a serious blow when sheâd chosen Ian over him tonight, but once heâd let his temper cool heâd remembered his earlier suspicions that the man was blackmailing her.
The more he thought about it, the more sense it made. She certainly hadnât seemed happy to see him tonight. In fact, sheâd practically pushed Nate out the door in a panic to get rid of him. The only reasonable explanation for her behavior was that Ian Brock might say something that she didnât want Nate to hear.
Which brought him full circle to his original problem. She still didnât trust him, even after experiencing the greatest form of intimacy two people could share. But he wasnât about to give up yet.
She might have dined with Ian this evening, but tonight and every night for the next seventeen days, sheâd be sleeping with Nate.
Carleen arrived in the Elvis suite even earlier than expected, though Nate was already in bed. Even after their marathon lovemaking session this afternoon, his body tensed at the sight of her, kicking his libido into high gear.
Her eyes widened in surprise at the sight of him. âI didnât think youâd be here yet.â
âLooks like weâre both early tonight. What happened to your dinner date?â
âIt wasnât a date,â she clarified. âI didnât even know Ian was coming over.â
Yet, sheâd shown Nate the door the moment her old boyfriend had arrived. Jealousy flared again, but he tamped it down, sucking in a deep breath. âIâm just glad youâre here.â
âI have a busy day tomorrow,â she replied, heading toward the bathroom, duffel bag in hand. âI wanted to get a good nightâs sleep.â
âNot tonight, Carleen,â he murmured under his breath, as she disappeared into Graceland. âNot tonight.â
When she emerged several minutes later, Nate closed his eyes and feigned sleep. The mattress dipped with her weight as she climbed into bed beside him.
Her warmth seeped over to his side of the bed and his body hardened at the thought of how easy it would be to reach over and touch her. To run his fingers over the curve of her hip and along the supple line of her buttocks.
